"The share of adults in middle-income households fell from 61 percent of the population in 1971 to 50 percent in 2015. For the first time, they were outnumbered by those in lower- and upper-income tiers. The share of overall household income among middle-income families has declined from 62 percent in 1970 to 43 percent in 2014. On the other hand, wealthy households — representing only about one-fifth of the adult population — earned almost half the nation's household income. In 1970, they held only 29 percent of it."
